Global Game Jam Presents: The Community Spotlight: Michaela 'Kayla' Lakey & Final Bosses

Michaela 'Kayla' Lakey: "Last year, I was feeling pretty burnt out with university and participating in the GGJ threw me back into the whole game design process and reminded me of why I love this so much and why I feel so passionate about game design."

Kayla took part in GGJ 2022 in Oklahoma. This is her story and greetings to the Global Game Jam Community.

Howdy! My name is Michaela (Kayla) Lakey and I'm a senior in BS Gaming + Animation at Oklahoma Christian University and a big cat & video game lover! I've participated in the Global Game Jam the past two years in a row - and I've had fantastic experiences both times. It's really invigorating to witness my growth from last year's to this year's. I look forward to 2023!

I grew up in Judsonia, Arkansas - a super small town in the middle of nowhere. We didn't have a lot of money growing up, so I played games on my GameCube but didn't really have access to anything else, minus YouTube - so I super loved watching Let's Plays and documentaries detailing the background of games and game design. I decided in 7th grade I wanted to be a game developer - so, with the love and encouragement from teachers, family, and friends, I eventually made the decision to move to Oklahoma City and study game development!

Final Bosses team participated in Global Game Jam 2022

My amazing team Final Bosses - Lacey, Lizley, Lizzie, Annie, Kalyn, and Emma - came up with the idea of fitting together horror & cute to represent the theme of duality. We crafted Ready for Tea, which is a game where a sweet doll must gather supplies for her tea party - but she has an uninvited guest, a twisted version of herself, that she must evade! My teammates are spectacular and so incredibly talented. I'm really proud of what we made during those 48 hours and what a phenomenal experience it was!!

GGJ reminded me of why I love game design so much

GGJ is such a solid immersion and creative challenge of the start to finish process of crafting a game. Last year, I was feeling pretty burnt out with university and participating in the GGJ threw me back into the whole game design process and reminded me of why I love this so much and why I feel so passionate about game design. GGJ has pushed me out of my comfort zone and pushed my abilities and creativity as a game designer in the best way. It's such a refreshing experience and it truly means the world to me. I hope to continue participating for many years to come!
