The Global Game Jam® Announces Academic Event, University Relations and Research Chair

For Immediate Release

San Luis Obispo, California, (August 30, 2016) -- The Global Game Jam®  (GGJ) and the International Conference on Game Jams, Hackathons, and Game Creation (ICGJ) are joining forces. ICGJ will become the second event to be managed and organized by Global Game Jam Inc., an educational nonprofit based in San Luis Obispo, California. Dr. Allan Fowler, founder of ICGJ commented:

The Global Game Jam is the go-to place for anything related to game jams, both inside and outside of academia, and thus I am very happy to work with GGJ board to make this unique academic event even more exciting.

First announced in 2015, ICGJ is the world’s first and only academic conference on game jams. The 2016 event featured twelve accepted papers and three showcase games, in addition to a keynote and a panel discussion. The acceptance rate was 40%. Proceedings of the one-day conference are published at the ACM Digital Library. The 2017 event is scheduled for February 26 and hosted at Github headquarters in San Francisco. It is keenly anticipated by researchers and scholars with an interest in game jams and rapid prototyping.

Dr. Allan Fowler was tapped in June to head Global Game Jam’s research organization as the new research chair. GGJ board member and American University Professor Lindsay Grace will lead the overall university relations for Global Game Jam. Fowler and Grace are co-chairs of ICGJ 2017.

As the world’s largest game jam, GGJ has always had a strong following in academia. Not only do many schools host a location of  their own and encourage their students to participate, the GGJ is increasingly used as a vehicle for scientific research. Gorm Lai, President and co-founder of Global Game Jam said:

Our charity, Global Game Jam Inc. has now reached a level of maturity where we are ready to take on additional initiatives. Because of the strong connection that we already have with academia, and all the exciting new research that is taking place on game jams, joining forces with ICGJ seems like the natural next step for us.
