GGJ at GDC 2022

Global Game Jam is proud to be hosting multiple sessions for Game Developers Conference(GDC) 2022 attendees that we hope to see some of you at this year.

GDC takes place from 21 - 25 March 2022 at the Moscone Center in San Francisco, CA, USA. (All times are PST)

In person Roundtable:

Location: Room 208, South Hall

The Global Game Jam roundtable is a unique opportunity for everyone involved in Global Game Jam 2022 who are attending GDC to share their knowledge, stories, and experiences, with the goal of improving game jam culture globally, and making connections with the other organizers and the wider GGJ community.

Hear stories from game jams from across the world and be part of shaping the future of Global Game Jam. This discussion is targeted at game jam organizers, attendees and interested parties involved in Global Game Jam, an event that spans over 100 countries and touches the lives of tens of thousands of people each year.

Informal lunch gathering:

Grab some lunch from a nearby vendor and meet us in the Yerba Buena Garden outside of Moscone Center after the in-person Roundtable session to continue networking and socializing. We will decide on an indoor venue and announce it on our Discord and Social Media channels if the weather doesn't allow for meeting outdoors.

This is an online version of the in-person roundtable for GGJ community members that are attending GDC virtually this year.

Leveraging Games in the Fight to Protect Local Cultures:

Location: Room 3014, West Hall

Global Game Jam partnered with the U.S. Government’s Cultural Antiquities Task Force (CATF), led by the U.S. Department of State, to create the Cultural Heritage Game Jam in November 2021. The Cultural Heritage Game used the powerful medium of games to raise awareness about the importance of cultural heritage to local communities. The jam was a great success, with about 900 developers participating from 72 countries to create 116 games.

Come hear this engaging panel session that will discuss why the State Department considers games a powerful tool for combatting threats to cultural heritage and see the outcome of the jam itself with examples of some of the solutions created by the global developer community. Most importantly, meet the jam team that created the winning game "Purunmachu: Whispers of the Chachapoyas" based on pre-Columbian Peruvian cultures. They will discuss their work and how their game grapples with the complex issues of cultural heritage looting, protection, and community values.

Local Game Community Organizers Roundtable:

The Local Game Community Organizes roundtable is for people who are currently organizing events and communities in their areas for independent or professional game developers or people who are looking to start a game developer community. Organizing events and meetups for your local game development community can be a fun and rewarding experience that creates lasting friendships and memories for both organizers and participants. In building those communities, the organizers can often find themselves without a community of their own to lean on for knowledge and support. This roundtable invites games industry community organizers of all experience levels to come together, meet one another and learn from each other's experience in building and growing their respective communities and forming the basis for a support network for organizers around the world.

While this is not an official GGJ event it is hosted by our Director of Operations, Tim Cullings, and is relevant to any of our organizers who also run local game development meetups or are looking to start one in their area.

Game Career Seminar: Full Circle: From Game Jams to Industry and Back:

Game jams are fun and great learning experiences, but how do you translate what you did in a game jam into skills for a resume? How can a game jam land you a job in the games industry? How do you turn a game jam game into a shippable product? In this talk, we will discuss strategies for game jamming, practical and networking skills development, and moving from a prototype to a shippable product. We will also examine how to frame and market game jam experience for roles at game studios, use the skills from game jams as part of daily game development work, and how to meet and overcome challenges with jamming. By highlighting the value and power of game jams, we hope to encourage and empower more people to participate in jamming as a way into a game career and beyond.
