GGJ Weekend Schedule
Friday, January 29th @ 5pm EST:
Join us on our brand new MICA Game Lab Discord channel where we'll start things off with the official GGj keynote videos and this year's top secret theme reveal. Then you'll have an opportunity to chat with fellow jammers, form teams, and start making games. Let us know beforehand by emailing [email protected] if you're open to teaming up with someone new.
Saturday and Sunday (January 30-31st):
The weekend will be loosely structured, so you can work when, and for however long, you would like. MICA Game Lab members will be on the Discord channel a few times each day to check in on everyone and offer support to those who may need it.
Sunday, January 31st @ 5pm EST:
Games are uploaded to the GGJ site and then we'll spend some time hanging out on Discord playing everyone’s games, chatting, and handing out some fun MICA Game Lab awards to attendees. Finished games will also be added to the MICA Game Lab itch.io page and featured on the Game Lab's website over the next few weeks.
How do I get into the MICA Game Lab Global Game Jam Discord?
We'll post an invite link on this registration page to get into the Discord sometime in the morning on Friday, January 29th. If it's not there, we're probably still sleeping. Try again later, we'll post it soon!
If you haven't used Discord before, be sure to set up an account and download the client ahead of time. You can grab it here: https://discord.com/
I'm in Baltimore. Can I jam in-person at the MICA Game Lab?
Not this year, but hopefully next year. Let's go, vaccinations!
Do I need to be a MICA student to join the jam site?
Not at all! Our site is open to anyone over the age of 18. Invite a friend! Plus, since the jam is online, you can join from anywhere in the world.
What if I‘ve never made a game before?
That’s okay! Game jams can be a good place to try new things. You could make a non-digital game, a playful intervention, a puzzle... maybe a toy! You can also join a team on Friday evening and focus on contributing the different skills you already have.
How do I join a team?
There will be time at the beginning of the jam to chat on Discord with other attendees and form new teams.
If possible, reach out to us beforehand by sending an email to [email protected] to let us know that you’re interested in joining a team so we can help support you on Friday evening.
If you already have people that you want to work with, feel free to coordinate before the event. It’s also okay to make a game by yourself!
I want to jam but I can’t attend the whole weekend. What should I do
You can participate as much as you would like. If you’re working on a team, just be sure to communicate your availability with your teammates early on, You’re also welcome to join us on Discord at 5pm EST on Sunday to play what everyone made over the weekend.
Do I need to make a video game?
No. Non-digital games are welcome as well. At the end of the jam, you can submit a print & play version, or photo/video/text documentation, of your game. If you have coding skills you can even use software like Tabletop Simulator to share a playable version of your non-digital game.
What if I don't like the theme?
Don't use it :) While themes are sometimes a good constraint, it shouldn't be the focus.Truth is, sometimes they just don't inspire us. If that's the case, you can make any game you would like. Have fun!
What do I need to participate in the jam?
You will need access to the internet, a computer or smartphone, and Discord (https://discord.com).
You will also need to register on the MICA Game Lab GGJ site (https://globalgamejam.org/2021/jam-sites/mica-game-lab)
Otherwise, you’re free to use whatever tools you need to make your game.
I have more questions. Who should I contact?
